Iceland June 2021 – A journey divided into 4 parts

In June 2021 we went to Iceland again for our holiday, after we been to Iceland in April to view the Volcano at Fagradalsfjall.

Back in April coming to Iceland was very difficult, especially because you had to stay in quarantine for 5 days after arrival…

(see post here: Iceland – The active Volcano at Fagradalsfjall )

A journey divided into 4 parts, the movie

End of June was a bit different. First, both of us were vaccinated and second you did not have to go into quarantine.

Our trip this time could easily seperated into 4 parts because

this time we planned to achieve 4 goals:

1. The changes of the volcano since we last seen it in April

If you read our article about the volcano eruption at Fagradalsfjall you already know how thrilled we were standing just a few meters away from an erupting volcano. Since we returned to home we had an eye on the webcams knowing we will be back in late june. The changes we witnessed were quite dramatic.

Head on to the first Part of our journey…

2. Hike the Laugavegur and Fimmvörduhals from Skogafoss to Landmannalaugar

In 2019 we hiked from Landmannalauagar to Skogar in 3 days. The distance is about 85km with lots of elevation gain. This time we wanted to do the same route the opposite way in 4 days …

3. Hike the Westfjords from Hesteyri to Hornvik and back to Seydisjofjördur

4. Visit places we havent been in 2019 and 2020

Packing List

Our trip included lots activities requiring special gear like Hiking, Camping, Horse Riding, Photography and Filming. Not an easy task to fit all the extra stuff into our bags to meet the 23kg limit of the flight.

We had to reconsider multiple times whats really needed and whats not. Sometimes its not the easiest. I for example had just on pair of jeans with me and 2 functional trousers (great for hiking).

Always ask yourself if you really need things.

Essential things cannot be left behind, especially when there is a multi day hike where you have to be prepared for all sorts of weather. (Head on over to our Hiking recommendation list to have a look what we pack)

For this trip I invested quite heavily into new gear like a DJI Air 2s and a Sony A7RIV (expensive I know). Especially the drone update from my old Mavic Air was worth every euro (still image quality is awesome).
