South America 2025 – #17 – Peru – Huayhuash Trek #8 – Jahuacocha to Cuartelhuain

09.05.2025

Final day of our 8 day trek of Huayhuash. Start at 4150m elevation. The goal for this day was to hike around 13km to the starting point via the the eighth of 8 passes named Rondoy at 4750m of elevation.

Below is the Map from my GPS-Tracking for the whole Trek.

Final day of this amazing trek. This day we had to start early (at around 6AM) to arrive at the starting point on time. We opted to hike via the pass Rondoy at 4750m elevation. The standard route usually is to end im Llamac, but we decided to go up the last pass and end up almost where we started close to Cuartelhuain.

Best decision, because we had amazing mountains and views for the last time. The other path is is just a more or less boring hike out of a long valley.

As soon as we reached the pass we experienced extreme wind conditions along the ridge. We could see the high winds already from the hike up.

We descended and it got a bit less but it started to snow and then rain. A bit further down we already could see where we started 8 days ago. Arriving at the road we were happy, exhausted and tired.

This trek was one of the hardest things we ever did.

Some quick facts:

Total distance we hiked: 110km

Elevation gain: 5492m

Elevation loss: 5535m

Passes: 8

Highest altitude: 5080m

The drive back to Huaraz was about 4h along a very bad road (the same we came). When we arrived we took a long needed shower. We drove with the night bus back to Lima to get our flight the next day.

Thank you Peru!
