South America 2025 – #04 – Bolivia – Salar de Uyuni – Train Wrecks and Salt Flats

25.04.2025

We had an early morning flight from La Paz to Uyuni. The flight is very short. From there we were picked up by our company we booked a 3 day 2 nights tour. The first day you stay the night in Uyuni. Initially we wanted to drive for ourselves, but after considering multiple factors, we opted for a shared tour.

Reasons are simple: Just one rental car company is allowing you to drive to the salt flats and the lagoons (and it seems like they often charge renters for supposedly damaged parts like shock absorbers) and if you dont know the area around the lagoons it can get very tricky, as you dont have roads and no cellphone service if you get stuck. For those reasons we decided to do a shared tour.

When planning we wanted to include the Tunupa Volcano, but in march it had massive rainfalls so it was impossible to go there. On the plus side we had water on the flats for the mirror effects 😉

At first we went to the Train Wrecks. Problem: Everybody get driven there at the same time… Pictures are looking nice and its very interesting, waaay too crowded.

After we continued to pick up some rubber boots and went to some salt sculptures and to the salt flats for some dinosaurs 😉 and the sunset. You can have fun with perspective there 😉

The flats are surreal. You dont see a horizon and the sunset is fantastic!

Altitude is slowly getting better for us. Salar de Uyuni is at approx 3650m and our bodies starting to adapt.
