South America 2025 – #11 – Peru – Huayhuash Trek #2

Second day of our 8 day trek of Huayhuash. After a good sleep we got up with a bit of sunshine. This day we started the hike at 4250m elevation. The goal for this day was to hike around 12km to the second campsite Carhuacocha via the second of 8 passes named Carhuac at 4500m of elevation.

We started hiking at around 7:30AM after a good breakfast. The pass for this day was not too high, but still we had an elevation gain of 449m. The path this day was not too difficult. Unfortunately Kerstin developed a serious cough and increasing exhaustment, at times unable to talk. The weather was quite similar like the day before. Mixed with rain and clouds, except for the sunrise and sunset. Magnificent nature! This day we had the first views of the high peaks of Yerupaja Grande, Perus second highest peak, Yerupaja Chico and Siula Grande.

We arrived at around 5PM at the campsite (with numerous breaks). At this altitude you have to take it slower plus enjoy nature.

The campsite is at a lagoon with amazing views of the high peaks. The campsites itself have very basic toilets and nothing else. When you arrive you have your tents and thats it. Nature!
